Curaçao Cruise Port Guide

willemstad cruise port

Visit the Riffort where you can find an array of restaurants and souvenir shops. You can also climb the fort where you will have the best view over the Sint Anna Bay and the Handelskade. Walking through the streets of Otrobanda, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the sounds and smells of daily life in Curaçao. The aroma of freshly-baked pastechi’s wafts out from local batido trucks, while the lively chatter of locals fills the air. You can find people playing a game of dominoes or selling hand painted souvenirs at the Brionplein.

Explore on a Free Walking Tour

Just a 15-minute drive from the pier, you will find a precious sandy beach with lots of amenities on the grounds of the gated community of the same name. Additionally, several hotels and resorts dot the sandy shoreline, enhancing the appeal of Mambo Beach as a favored spot among cruise ship passengers due to its diverse amenities. The area offers a vibrant atmosphere with Curaçao markets, local boutiques, and charming cafes along narrow streets, providing a diverse range of items from fashion to (locally crafted) souvenirs. This means that you walk straight into the hustle and bustle of the capital city when embarking the ship.

Where You Dock in Willemstad – Curacao

You can relax on miles and miles of tranquil, serene beaches on its southwest coast or go for adrenaline pumping outdoor pursuits on its northwest coast. If none of that interests you, there is always its glorious colorful town, rich with history, culture, excellent cuisine, and friendly residents. For the local lunch experience, i recommend visiting the Plasa Bieu. The Plasa Bieu is a covered market hall featuring six open kitchens, each of which offers delicacies from the Curaçao cuisine.

Willemstad, Curacao Cruise Port Guide Info

You can also spend some time hanging out with the sea urchins, stars, and cucumbers at the touch tanks. Visit Curacao’s sea aquarium, one of the most unique aquariums in the world, where instead of large tanks of sea-water, the aquarium has real sea-water pools fed by the sea. One of the largest and oldest art galleries is Alma Blou open Tuesday to Saturday in a former plantation house at Habaai in Willemstad. Escape the heat of the day and step into the cool, well-lit interiors of this beautiful place and enjoy Curacao’s creativity. Set in Landhuis, a former plantation that ran well into the 20th century, the Savonet museum is based on the plantation’s partially restored buildings. It showcases the plantation’s history through lineage exhibit of the owners and African workers of the plantation.

Oceania Cruises organizes 7 shore excursions, and Princess has 24 excursions available. Walking inland from Koningin Wilhelminapark, along Columbusstraat (Columbus Street), will take you to the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue - a unique Jewish Cultural Historical Museum. A bit farther, by the waterfront, the Floating Market is on the northern edge of this area - around 300 meters (900 feet) from the Koningin Wilhelminapark - and a sight not to be missed. The island has a rich history, much of it focused on plantations and the slave trade. The Kura Hulanda museum explores the dark history of Curacao’s involvement in African slavery in the Caribbean.

Experience Curacao at Punda

Midway past the two beaches are rocky cliffs where you can go cliff jumping, an exhilarating moment that you should try at least once or maybe twice. If you’re not as daring, you can relax under the shade of a palapa with a refreshing cool cocktail in hand. There is an entrance fee to access the beach, that starts from $6 per every four people in a vehicle. The small calm bay is protected on either side by huge cliffs which adds to the charm of the place. The calm shallow to deep waters of the place are, however, what attract people here. Adjoined to Christoffel National Park is Shete Boka Park, a rugged north coast stretch with dramatic headlands jutting out into the sea forming nice little coves.

The most unusual site which will catch your eye as soon as you dock in Curacao is the pontoon bridge. This is a floating pedestrian bridge from 1888 connection the two parts of the city centre. The bridge blocks the entree to one of the biggest natural harbours in the world. The bridge will swing open every now and then allowing ships to sail in. When the pontoon bridge opens make sure not to be on it or you’ll be stuck.

Both piers are within walking distance from the city's main tourist attractions. At both terminals are available taxis (be sure to negotiate the rate). Public transportation service includes the ”Buki di Bus” and trolleys. The Mega Pier is for large cruise ships that cannot fit under the Island’s Queen Juliana Bridge. This pier is located in Otrabanda, and is where you are most likely to dock when cruising with major cruise lines such as Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Celebrity Cruises.

This synagogue, otherwise known as Snoa in Portuguese, is the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere. The town, whose buildings display a marriage of Dutch and Spanish architecture, has a rich historical and cultural heritage meriting its UNESCO World Heritage recognition. Thursdays are also for salsa dancing at Mundo Bizarro and at friday evening you can enjoy live music and salsa at the Riffort. Besides all the nice sights that Punda has to offer, you can also find an array of open air café’s and shops where you can enjoy a cool drink or shop for souvenirs, fashion, electronics and jewelry.

By the 20th century, Curaçao became a favorite destination for cruise ships, warmly welcoming visitors from all over the world to the tiny island. Bright, airy, and beachy Willemstad may feel like a Dutch city, but don’t let the colonial pastels and European-style streets fool you—you’re on the Southern Caribbean cruise of a lifetime. On cruises to Curaçao, beautiful beaches, clear waters, and incredible diving and snorkeling will quickly steal your heart.

There are many interesting artifacts, restored antiques, and photographs that depict the former way of life in Curacao. This is a nice break away from the beaches that both you and the kids will enjoy. A popular place to grab authentic Curacao meals is the Plasa Bieu (old market). Here, fried plantains, jerk chicken, and pumpkin pancakes with savory meat stews make up the menu. The communal style seating allows you to interact with the locals who favor the restaurant for lunchtime meals.

The city’s narrowest alleys and most vibrant facades are a blank canvas for both local and international artists. Punda has a lot to offer with a bustling market, local boutiques, and charming cafes lining its narrow streets. You’ll find everything from fashion to locally crafted souvenirs And when you need a break from shopping, you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many outdoor cafes and restaurants that dot the neighborhood. Strikingly vibrant colors adorn every building in Punda, with the iconic Handelskade waterfront as one of the main sights. The picturesque scene is a perfect blend of Dutch and Caribbean architecture, with a touch of Spanish influence that gives the neighborhood its unique character. The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive in Willemstad is the stunning architecture.

The most famous attraction here is the legendary Tugboat shipwreck, lying 5 m (16.4 ft.) under the water’s surface, in the shallow, pristine waters of the bay. You can swim to the boat directly from Tugboat Beach, and explore its beautiful marine life. Caracas Bay is a dynamic place packed with restaurants, bars, hotels, and recreational areas. A small, inhabited island (“Klein” means “little”) of Klein Curacao lies about 10 km/6 miles southeast of Curacao and is one of the most famous snorkeling and diving spots for turtle spotting. Hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles lay their eggs on the island’s beaches, and you can often spot them swimming in their wild, natural habitat.

Cruise Ship Pollution Is Causing Serious Health And Environmental Problems

are cruise ships bad for the environment

They’re doing everything they can to pack these floating cities full of tourists while polluting everything in their path. In April 2019, eight Carnival companies violated their five-year probation by dumping plastic with food waste directly into the ocean (so this wasn’t the first time they did it) according to NPR. And all ships are allowed to drop untreated sewage directly in the ocean, as long as they’re at least three miles offshore, though 90 percent of cruise lines have an agreement not to dump untreated sewage. Even still, Carnival Cruise Lines along with Crystal Cruises and Costa Cruises received “F” ratings in terms of sewage treatment from the 2019 Report Card.

Air Pollution from Cruise Ships

The emissions from these ships have a significant impact on the air quality of the surrounding areas, including coastal cities and ports. Cruise ships generate a significant amount of waste, including air emissions, ballast water, wastewater, hazardous waste, and solid waste. One of the most significant ways cruise ships cause ocean pollution is through the direct discharge of waste into the ocean.

Smoke Stack “Scrubbers” = Another Cruise Industry Scam

Hurtigruten (the name means “Express Route” in English) was losing money, and Skjeldam, then commercial director at European budget airline Norwegian Air Shuttle, thought he could turn things around. In fact, they claim a range of environmental initiatives, but only do so halfheartedly. An outbreak on the Diamond Princess infected more than 700 people and killed 14. The ship was quarantined outside Japan for 27 days, making it one of the early pandemic horror stories.

Great Shampoo Bar Reviews [A Low-Pressure Intro to Plastic-Free July]

The world’s largest hybrid ferry will start transporting passengers between Britain and France in the next few years.Cruise ships are thought of as luxurious and built for fun, but they’re taking a major toll on the environment. Transitioning them to clean energy is the only solution to this problem if they’re going to continue to exist. A Norwegian company called Hurtigruten has already developed hybrid cruise ships, so perhaps change is on the way.

Noise pollution can cause hearing loss, stress, and behavioral changes in marine animals, which can ultimately lead to decreased reproduction rates and population decline. In July 2001, the carcass of a humpback whale known as “Snow” (due to the white markings on her fluke) was found floating in the bay. An investigation concluded she had died of massive trauma to her skull and cervical vertebrae, consistent with a vessel collision. Passengers and crew had spotted humpbacks near the ship, but the ship didn’t change course or speed. The particulates from burning bunker fuel often get cleared out of the air through precipitation, thus eventually polluting the ocean, Jacobson says.

The park’s budget now depends heavily on cruise ship money that funds research, salaries and in-park development. While only two ships are allowed in the park each day, there’s no limit on their size. Some would call this “industry capture”, wherein a regulatory authority becomes beholden to an industry it’s supposed to regulate. It comes from leftovers of the refining process and is used for large ships. Black carbon is often referred to as soot, and it is produced by burning this fuel and by wildfires.

Ships are now installing scrubbers, which clean the inexpensive fuel but dump pollutants into the water. Using LNG rather than other marine fuels cuts carbon dioxide emissions by a quarter. But a cruise ship using LNG emits more greenhouse gas emissions overall, because of something called “methane slip”, Comer said. This is where some gas is not burned, leading to emissions of methane, a climate gas far more potent than carbon dioxide.

How do cruise ships contribute to ocean pollution?

Accidental oil spills from cruise ships can cause significant harm to marine life and the environment. The direct discharge of waste from cruise ships can also include untreated wastewater, which can contain pathogens, nutrients, and other contaminants. This wastewater can be harmful to marine life and ecosystems, and it can also contribute to the growth of harmful algal blooms. To future archeologists, mega cruise ships might be some of the strangest artifacts of our civilization—these goliaths of mass-engineered delight, armed with dangling water slides and phalanxes of umbrellas.

Christmas: 10 Tips to Reduce Waste and Protect the Environment

The Carbon Management Platform allows companies to manage their CO2 emissions and to take steps to reduce them. Together, our work can elicit the global impact necessary to fight against climate change. 👉 Overall, the massive environmental impact created by a cruise ship is created by both the passenger’s activities and the actual cruise ship’s engine and need for power to travel via water. A cruise ship can offer almost anything that comes to mind, but because of all the activities occurring simultaneously – cruise ships often create a massive environmental impact. In this article, we’ll review what a cruise ship is, the nature of a vacation on a cruise ship, examples of cruise ship packages, the environmental impact of a cruise ship, and ways for cruise ships to become more sustainable.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the cruise industry was one of the fastest growing travel sectors, with passenger numbers rising steadily year-on-year. Even though cruise ships make up only a small fraction of the global shipping industry, their impact is huge. The authors of the study, Josep Lloret, Arnau Carreño Hrvoje Carić, Joan San and Lora E. Fleming found that the industry also impacts human health, with those who live near ports affected by noise and air pollution. Currently there’s little in the way of regulations to limit greenhouse gasses like CO2 and methane from shipping.

Then there’s hydrogen, though the lightest element can be tricky to work with, since it leaks easily and needs to be supercooled to get to high enough densities to transport, which uses a lot of energy. Hurtigruten’s work may prove out some worthy technologies that the rest of the cruise industry could adopt. Sails can help, but they wouldn’t be able to do more than provide an energy boost for many kinds of shipping. That leaves either biofuels or synthetic fuels produced using renewable energy—each with its own drawbacks. Disney is working on a massive cruise ship port in the Bahamas at Lighthouse Point. This port is opposed by community groups and will cause harm to coral reefs and migratory patterns of marine wildlife.

Carnival Corporation is currently on criminal probation – again – for repeatedly dumping raw sewage and systematically lying about it. (And Carnival Corporation is the biggest player in the industry – they own Princess Lines, Holland America and many others. All have been found guilty of felony counts of deliberate pollution for dumping both plastic and sewage into the ocean. The untreated sewage contains harmful pathogens and bacteria that can cause health problems for marine life and humans. Batteries are more energy efficient for small to medium-sized ships that aren’t going long distances. But for journeys longer than a few dozen miles, hydrogen fuel cells are necessary because the weight of the batteries starts affecting efficiency levels. Cruise ships could just be banned, of course, but Jacobson says there’s a pretty simple technological solution.

By the end of 2023, an estimated 31.5 million passengers will travel on a cruise ship, according to Statista, and that figure exceeds even pre-pandemic numbers. The sector is expected to keep growing exponentially, with Statista estimating nearly 40 million annual cruisers by 2027. “However, the majority of the industry – especially companies like Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, which have the largest ships – are significantly lagging behind.

Cruise operators say ships can reduce emissions by switching off engines and plugging into low-carbon electricity when moored. But an investigation by openDemocracy has found that cruise ships regularly fail to use onshore power at Southampton, Britain’s largest cruise port. Has the cruise line installed shorepower or adopted cleaner fuel worldwide? In determining the Air Pollution Reduction grade for each ship in a cruise line, ships that dock at a port and plug in to available shoreside power hookups were graded.

Some may struggle to understand the more expensive nature of a cruise ship, but in reality – the cost is justified with the staggering amount of included activities passengers can experience whilst on a cruise ship. In fact, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), cruise ship goers are set to exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2019 – with 35.7 million cruise ship travelers expected in 2024 alone. CLIA states that around 150 ships in its members’ fleets are equipped with scrubbers, of which around one-third are open-loop systems. Their use will be phased out with the switch to new fuels such as LNG, Gill said. However, critics contend a lack of oversight and transparency persists in the industry when it comes to the treatment facilities’ effectiveness.

As such, cruise operators have been urged to switch to cleaner fuel alternatives with a lower sulfur content by 2020, but few have heeded these calls. The filthy fuel (called marine gas oil) means the big diesel engines on cruise ships emit tons of toxic smog that people on board and in port cities have to breathe. Cruise ships can have a range of environmental impacts, including damage to marine ecosystems, harm to marine mammals, and contribution to climate change. Cruise ships contribute significantly to ocean pollution through the dumping of sewage waste. It is essential that proper regulations and treatment facilities are put in place to protect marine ecosystems and human health.

And staterooms aboard Mardi Gras® are packed with innovative changes to both. It's the way the ring-lit vanity mirror lights you evenly and shadow-free as you get ready. How the ottoman cushion flips over to serve as an extra table. And even those reading lights, recessed into the wall so you can read in bed without waking anyone! Better comfort, lighting and storage all spring from a deep understanding we've developed around how people actually use their staterooms… and how small changes to the room add up to make the experience that much better. (Enough USB charging ports for everybody’s stuff? Oh yes!) Thoughtful, guest-centric design is how we do it… and all this in-room convenience comes paired with a fresh new look.

Uncover the Hidden Truths: The Ultimate Guide to Dentist Appointment Costs

Dental appointments are crucial for maintaining good oral health. The cost of a dental appointment can vary depending on several factors, such as the location of the dentist, the type of procedure being performed, and the patient's insurance coverage. On average, a basic dental checkup and cleaning can cost around $100-$200. More complex procedures, such as fillings or crowns, can cost several hundred dollars or more.

Dental appointments are important for preventing and treating a variety of oral health problems, including cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. Regular dental checkups allow dentists to identify and address potential problems early on, before they become more serious and expensive to treat. Dental appointments can also provide patients with education and advice on how to maintain good oral hygiene at home.

Knocked-Out Tooth? Unveil the Secrets of Dental Restoration

A knocked-out tooth is a dental emergency. If you act quickly, there's a good chance that your dentist can put your tooth back in and save it. The success rate for reimplanting a tooth is highest when the tooth is reinserted within 30 minutes of being knocked out.

To increase the chances of successful reimplantation, it's important to keep the tooth moist. If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place with a clean cloth or gauze. If you can't put the tooth back in its socket, place it in a container of milk or saliva. Do not clean the tooth or remove any tissue that is attached to it.
